THE FLUTE FROM ANTIQUITY TO THE AGE OF THE ENLIGHTENMENT.

In the Geißenklösterle cave in southern Germany archaeologist have discovered the worlds oldest known musical instrument. A 40.000 years old flute made out of a vultures wing bone!

Since that time flutes have enchanted us with their haunting and compelling sounds.

Poul Høxbro has picked a selection of his flutes and invites to share a program with tones from antiquity to late 19th century.

The concert will feature Viking sounds, medieval compositions and traditional Scandinavian tunes. It will present renaissance and baroque dance suites and musical visits to ancient China and 19th century Italy.

In between the music are woven ancient legends and amazing facts about flutes and flautist (told in English, German, Swedish or Danish).

POUL HØXBRO - FLØJTER OG FORTÆLLING

I huler i sydtyskland har man fundet verdens ældste musikinstrumenter: Fint forarbejde fløjter af knogler fra svane, mammut og gåsegrib
De er mellem 35.000 og 40.000 år gamle! Siden den tid har fløjten rørt os med sin dragende og inderlige klang.

I dette program har fløjtevirtuosen og historiefortælleren, Poul Høxbro, samlet et udvalg af sine fløjter og inviterer til en oplevelse med toner og fortællinger fra oldtid til barok. Programmet vil byde på urtidsstemninger, vikingeklange og middelaldertoner. Skandinavisk folkemusik, renæssancedanse og solosuiter fra barokken. Fløjterne som kan høres til koncerten er blandt andre den urgamle benfløjte, middelalderens enhåndsfløjte og tromme og dobbeltpipe. Den nordiske seljefløjte og den kinesiske xun samt den  irske low whistle.

With resounding horns, magical flutes, shimmering shawms and jingling bells, the Viking world rang with the sounds of many different musical instruments - and many more types of music than the singing of the poets (skjalds) and the strumming of lyres. And if there is one person who has delved deeply into the history of these sounds, it is Poul Høxbro.

Take a journey with him back to the Viking Age and he will spellbind you with fascinating facts, wonderful stories and - most of all - the surprising richness and diversity of musical expression found in the various wind and percussion instruments of the Vikings.

The congregation is almost dancing in the aisles of the churches as they forget the world outside and sing the much loved hymns and sequences.
Kings, nobles and clerics show off their status to the world with imposing music played by the foremost musicians.

The people abandon themselves to the sound of the music at every festive event.

Scholars exchange heated views as to whether music and instruments are a devotional part of God´s creation or a direct route to perdition - a swaying bridge between heaven and earth or the dance of the devil. New mystical and impressive stories about the indomitable power of music are carried by travellers and listened to in frightened fascination.

EN REJSE I ORD OG TONER GENNEM MIDDELALDERENS EUROPA.

Et sted i Europa engang i middelalderen... Menigheder danser næsten i kirkerne, når de glemmer verden og synger de elskede hymner og sekvenser. Konger, fyrster og gejstelige lader impossant musik lyde og de dygtigste musikere optræde, når de skal vise deres status over for omverdenen. Folket hengiver sig uforbeholdent til spillemandens toner ved enhver festlig lejlighed.
De lærde har heftige meningsudvekslinger om, hvorvidt musik og instrumenter er en opbyggelig del af Guds skaberværk eller en direkte vej til fortabelse - en gyngende bro mellem himmel og jord eller et djævelens ritual. Nye mystiske og drabelige historier om musikkens utæmmelige kraft bringes videre af de rejsende og lyttes til med skrækblandet fascination.

Chain dances ­ carols ­ were without question the most popular type of dances in the Middle Ages. As the dances progressed through the streets, the chains grew longer and longer as more and more people joined in the dance, which could continue for hours. Young girls donned their prettiest clothes ­ maybe they would meet their future husband amonst the dancers! These popular dances were also adopted by the noble knights and young ladies of high society.

There are no contemporary medieval sources to tell us exactly what steps and variations were danced, but we can gain a fairly accurate idea from the 16th century dancing schools and more particularly from the descriptions of the many different Branles ­ evidently extremely popular in the higher classes of society. These tutors are also full of important information as to the etiquette required in the ballroom!

Learn these dances and elegant gestures to the accompaniment of that most popular of medieval dance bands ­ the pipe and tabor.

Kædedans var middelalderens mest populære danseform. I byerne kunne disse kæder blive utroligt lange og bevæge sig gennem gaderne i timevis. De unge piger blev stadset op og fandt måske sin kommende ægtemand blandt de dansende. Kirken måtte gang på gang påtale og forbyde dans i og omkring kirkerne og disse folkelige danse blev også en væsentlig kilde til underholdning blandt de noble riddere og frøkener.

Hvad disse danse indeholdt af trin og finesser får vi et temmelig godt billede af gennem 1500-tallets trykte danseskoler, hvor specielt de mange forskellige branlerklart illustrerer den folkelige afsmitning på dansene i de bedre kredse. Samtidigt indeholder disse skoler også nyttige anvisninger på, hvordan man skal opføre sig, for nu ikke at virke for grov og uslebet.
