Singing Clay

There are some very few - but wonderful - music instruments that are made solely of clay. There are two special ones in the flute family that really stand out – the Chinese xun and the Italian ocarina.

”Singing Clay” is a musical and poetic hymn to the earth. It is a firework of a solo programme for flutes made of this simple material from the earth´s surface. But don´t be fooled by the apparent simplicity of these instruments! The music they can produce is nothing short of amazing and covers a wide field of styles. The programme contains meditative eastern tones, virtuoso works from the 19th century and contemporary pjeces for xun.

And… Poul Høxbro weaves fascinating tales in amongst the music about clay, ceramics and flutes.

In other programmes the clay flutes can be heard with:

Jette Mogensen (organ)

Helen Davies (harp)

Thomas Nilsson (ceramic percussion)

Please contact me for further information on these different programmes.

The roots of the Chinese xun go 6 -7,000 years back in time. Its unique sound is introvert and expressive and is rarely heard in any other instrument. It is currently enjoying a renæssance in popularity, especially in its native China.

The first Italian ocarina was made in 1853 and became popular so quickly that in the course of a few years thousands of these instruments were produced. Virtuoso pjeces soon became a part of the repertoire.
